Intuit Canada is proud to have been the presenting partner of today’s Startup Day on the Hill event in Ottawa, where notable entrepreneurs came together with key industry and government stakeholders to support and drive entrepreneurial success and innovation in Canada.
Kicked off by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the day featured a number of stimulating keynote speakers, including Allen Lau, Robert Deluce, and the inspiring Jonathan Ortmans, who shared global best practices and his recommendations for Canada’s Innovation Strategy. Other highlights include insightful panel discussions with Tony Lacavera, Marissa McTasney, Janet Bannister, and The Honourable Bill Morneau.
Events like Startup Canada Day on the Hill are vital to Canada’s future. Accounting for about 98 per cent of employer businesses, small businesses are the cornerstones of our communities and form the backbone of the Canadian economy. Intuit continues to play an active role in Canada’s startup ecosystem because entrepreneurship is at the heart of everything we do. We help our customers manage and grow their businesses each and every day, and have a vested interest in small business success.
Intuit has worked with major players in the community like Startup Canada and the DMZ to improve financial literacy among entrepreneurs, expand the entrepreneurial ecosystem, equip innovative new, companies with the tools they need for long-term growth and help reduce the failure rate of Canadian startups.
The importance of the role played by grass-roots organizations like Startup Canada cannot be overstated. They are on the frontlines and see the challenges entrepreneurs face, as well as their successes. When entrepreneurs are equipped with the essentials, the sky is the limit, and it’s crucial that small business owners are aware of the education, tools and advisors made available to them through these incredible organizations.
Together with Startup Canada, Intuit has supported the launch of 25 grassroots Startup Communities as well as 23 co-working spaces for entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses across the country. We’ve also connected 3,000 entrepreneurs to financial literacy training and supported entrepreneur-driven initiatives to help build an Innovation Nation from the bottom up, from coast to coast.
The Liberal government’s promise to spend $800 million to support innovation clusters and networks across the country is a strong start. But it’s precisely that – a start. To truly transform Canada into the hotbed of innovation we all know it has the potential to be, we must think big, be entrepreneurial, and work together.
We encourage those who attended this year’s Startup Day on the Hill event to continue building and strengthening ties with business leaders and government across the startup ecosystem in order to propel our country and its entrepreneurs forward into the future with success.
